With around 250 participating locations, guests have many options for support Houston Restaurant Weeks, the month-long charity event that began on August 1st. While helping the Houston Food Bank is an undeniably good thing, some local entities are piggybacking on HRW’s success by running their own fundraising drives.
Both Kenny & Ziggy‘s and The union kitchen run their own charity events that benefit equally rewarding nonprofits. As with HRW, they offer set fixed-price menus that allow diners to order some of their best and most popular dishes while also raising money that will improve their community.
For the sixth year in a row, Kenny & Ziggy’s is participating in National Deli Month benefiting the Holocaust Museum of Houston. The restaurant in the Galleria area will contribute 10 percent of the museum’s revenue from a three-course meal for $ 38. Chef Ziggy Gruber tells CultureMap that his restaurant has donated around $ 20,000 to the museum since 2017.
The Deli Month menu gives guests the option to go beyond the restaurant’s popular sandwiches. You can choose from Jewish staple foods such as chopped liver, matzo ball soup and a knish (potato, spinach or kasha wrapped in puff pastry). Main courses include beef brisket, roast chicken, and Gruber’s signature Romanian steak. Dessert options include cheesecake and the fan-favorite seven-layer cake.
Founded in 2016 by Gruber and Jay Parker (Ben’s Best Deli in Rego Park, NY), National Deli Month draws attention to a once prominent restaurant establishment that is in decline due to changing tastes. The Deli Man documentary, in which Gruber is featured prominently, tells this story in more detail.
As for The Union Kitchen, the second year of the Month of Gr8 Giving fundraiser goes to Casa de Esperanza, a local nonprofit that provides much-needed residential and family support to children and infants at risk. All six locations of the eclectic comfort food restaurant offer a two-course lunch worth $ 20 and a three-course dinner worth $ 35, triggering donations of $ 2 and $ 3, respectively.
Rather than serving a menu in every restaurant, owners Doris and Paul Miller have allowed each location to offer dishes that appeal to local tastes. For example, dinner at the Ella location in the Garden Oaks / Oak Forest area includes mini crab cakes, a surf-and-turf from Gulf Shrimps with fillet medallions and blackened red snapper cheese, and a 10-ounce New York strip with blue cheese crumble and bacon jam.
In addition to a monetary donation, the restaurant also accepts donations from customers in the form of diapers, baby food, toys and other relief items, which Casa de Esperanza distributes to those in need.
