A brand new food truck brings California pastrami to Houston, complete with sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, and even fries with pickled and smoked meat.
Opened in mid-July, Southwest Pastrami Co. is a project by father-son duo Anthony Jackson, Sr. and Anthony Jackson, Jr., two entrepreneurs who wanted to bring a touch of Los Angeles to Houston.
Unlike East Coast pastrami, which is usually served sliced and neatly stacked on rye bread, West Coast is thinly shaved and piled high on a French bun, often accompanied with a side of jus. Perhaps the most famous version comes from The Hat, a Southern California fast food chain founded in 1951 that serves their sandwiches with mustard and pickles. The sandwich from Southwest Pastrami Co. is served with a signature dipping sauce.
“We moved to Houston years ago and looked in Houston for a good California-style pastrami and couldn’t find one,” says Anthony Jackson, Jr it’s not the same as the sandwich on the west coast. “
In addition to sandwiches, Southwest Pastrami Co. also serves chili cheese dogs, colossal cheeseburgers, chili cheese fritos, french fries and more. A pile of the cured beef can be added to almost any dish. According to Farley Elliott, editor-in-chief of Eater Los Angeles, “big, messy volume is key” to West Coast style.
So far, the food truck has been a hit with transplants from LA who now live in Houston.
“We have only been open for two weeks and have had over a hundred California customers explaining how they have been looking for good California pastrami since they arrived in Houston,” said Jackson, Jr. “We know the feeling. Pastrami is to California what brisket is to Texas. “
Southwest Pastrami Co. is typically parked at 9431 South Highway 6. Follow them on Instagram for menu updates and location information.
