A new restaurant inspired by the super-fresh, artfully prepared cuisine and creative tropical cocktails of Tulum opens next week at MKT in the Heights.
Casa Nomad, which opens Thursday, September 23 at 600 North Shepherd Drive, is the latest project from the minds behind Wicklow Heights, the dog-friendly cocktail bar in a bungalow in Shady Acres.
While Wicklow Heights hosts the occasional steak and burger night, Casa Nomad, an intimate space that seats 30, is fully focused on the food, especially the kitchen of Tulum, Mexico. The resort has become known in recent years for its food, which uses fish and local products to be prepared and cooked using techniques passed down from the Mayans.
At Casa Nomad, these include dishes such as tuna tostadas with truffle crema, roasted bone marrow with guajillo jam and, for dessert, a coconut panna cotta with charred pineapple. The menu also includes a range of tropical-themed cocktails, such as the El Cenote with green chartreuse, Elote liqueur and pineapple juice, and the Jungle Disco with tequila, pineapple, serrano syrup and carrot juice. Casa Nomad will also have an extensive list of tequilas and mezcals.
This isn’t the first place in Houston to take inspiration from Yucatan paradise. In February, a Tulum-inspired bar called White Rhino opened in the Second Ward, serving tropical cocktails with a focus on sustainability. It’s not the only new project the Wicklow Heights folks are working on either – they’re opening a cocktail bar called Highline Park in MKT development sometime later this year.
