The state is tracking COVID numbers by trauma service areas that include Harris and eight other counties with a total population of nearly 7 million.
HOUSTON – For the second straight year, hospitals in the greater Houston area set a record for COVID hospital admissions of 3,088. It’s the highest number since the pandemic began in 2020.
At the same time, the state health department reports that only 44 regular intensive care beds are available for the Houston Trauma Service Area, which has nearly 7 million people. Together with Harris County, the TSA includes Austin, Colorado, Fort Bend, Matagorda, Montgomery, Walker, Waller and Wharton Counties.
A separate TSA, which includes Galveston, Brazoria, Chambers, and Liberty counties, has only 6 regular ICU beds, according to the state.

According to DSHS, there is a record low of 314 occupied intensive care beds across the state.
DSHS tracks ICU beds and other critical COVID data nationwide and by trauma service areas or TSAs across the state.
Hospitals at Texas Medical Center reported Monday that 100% of their regular ICU beds were full. They have a phase 2 plan that converts medical and surgical beds into intensive care beds. But with the nursing staff shortage, there is no guarantee that they will be able to fill them. These were 83% occupied on Monday.
On Tuesday, the Houston Department of Health announced that more than 3,010 residents have died from COVID.
