Best ice cream: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams has developed a frenzied cult of ice cream aficionados across the country in the years since Jeni Britton Bauer opened the first Jeni store in Columbus, Ohio in Out of state in 2006, the much-touted dessert spot didn’t have until January A permanent presence in H-Town in 2020 when Jeni’s opened a store on 19th Street in The Heights. Since then, Jeni’s has inscribed itself firmly in the upper echelons of the Houston ice cream scene with its delicious treats. Made with a heavenly smooth buttercream body (with the exception of the handful of dairy-free options) with no funky synthetic ingredients, the impeccable texture of each ice cream may be the first thing you notice with the first bite, but it’s the wildly creative, ever-changing list of more classic and innovative flavors that really set Jeni’s apart.
The classic flavors include the jammy, crunchy Brambleberry Crisp, the delicious Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks and the sinfully decadent Gooey Butter Cake. Jeni’s is known for adding even wilder flavors into the mix: the tangy, tart goat cheese with red cherries is one of the coolest combinations we’ve ever seen, and the absolutely wildest concoction Jeni’s made was only for a short time everything bagel taste. Launched just before the New Year at the end of 2020 and disappeared in no time, the sweet base with cream cheese flavor goes exceptionally well with the buttery, salty, garlic crumbles that are scattered everywhere. We hope it returns in the future, but until then we’ll be more than happy to stick with the standout classic flavors that put Jeni’s on the menu first.
