Households in Houston can qualify for as much as $ 1,200 per baby below the federal pandemic program

HOUSTON (CW39) HISD, the largest county in Texas, wants families to know they can qualify for up to $ 1,200 per child under the federal pandemic program.

Families can now apply for a Pandemic Electronic Power Transfer (P-EBT), a one-time benefit for families temporarily unable to access student meals in the 2020-2021 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The application is available online from June 2 to August 13, 2021 at

The benefit program is offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and offers eligible families up to $ 1,200 per child. It was first established last year to help families buy food during the pandemic.

The amount of the benefit depends on which school the student attended and how many days most students received distance learning.

Eligible families include families with children 21 and under who were certified for free or discounted meals in a school in Texas in the 2020-2021 school year, as well as those with children in schools that offer free meals through the community eligibility statement.

Since HISD provides free meals to all students under the Community Eligibility Provision, all HISD students are eligible for P-EBT benefits.

“We have worked hard over the past year to ensure we continue to provide access to healthy food for our students and families who need it most,” said HISD Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan. “As we are completing our own community distribution program, this benefit comes at the perfect time to help our families who are still recovering.”

Families who received Snap benefits in the 2020-2021 school year will have P-EBT benefits loaded onto their Lone Star Card. Families who did not receive any SNAP benefits in the 2020–2021 school year will receive a P-EBT card with funds in the mail.

P-EBT benefits can be used wherever SNAP food benefits are accepted and at any retailer who accepts the Lone Star Card to buy household items such as fruit, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products and bread.

For more information, please visit or call the P-EBT Call Center at 833-442-1255 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central Time.
