NORMAN, Oklahoma. – The University of Houston women’s golf program was tied for 12th place on Sunday evening after the first 36 holes of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club.

As a team, the Cougars scored a score of 296 in the morning session and a total of 291 in the afternoon round for a 36-hole score of 587 on the 6,112 yard, par-70 course.

Sophomore Delaney Martin and Senior Maria Jose Martinez split 24th at 144 to lead the Cougars with 70 shoots each on the first day.

Senior Ariana Saenz finished 44th with 147, while Junior Annie Kim finished 64th with 152. Sophomore Nicole Abelar was 79th with 162.

The state of Oklahoma held the lead with 549 on the first day, 18 strokes ahead of Illinois. Florida State (568), Texas A&M (568), Baylor (571), TCU (573), Texas State (574), Oklahoma (577), Iowa State (580) and UTSA (583) completed the top 10 leaders .

Oklahoma’s Caley McGinty held the lead 6 under 67 on the first day after shooting consecutive 67s on Sunday. Kornkamol Sukaree (Illinois) and Taglao Jeeravivitaporn (Iowa State) took second place with 138.

The two-day 54-hole tournament ends on Monday at 8.30 a.m. with the last 18 holes.

This is the Cougars’ second fall tournament after participating in the Sam Golden Invitational Season Opening from September 13-14 at Wildhorse Golf Club on Robson Ranch in Denton, Texas.

TEE TIMES

In the finals on Monday, the Cougars compete in groups of student athletes from Kansas State and SMU, starting with No. 10.

Abelar starts the day for the Cougars at 8:30 a.m. with Kim (8:40 a.m.), Saenz (8:50 a.m.), Martin (9:10 a.m.) and Martinez (9:10 a.m.).

After the Schooner Fall Classic, the Cougars will tee off at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., October 4-6. The Cougars will meet their male colleagues from UH at this event, which airs on the GOLF Channel every day.

From there, Houston will complete its fall schedule when it competes in the Jim West Challenge at the Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas October 17-18.
