- Currently, more than 8,000 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Texas, and the state is reporting thousands of additional cases every day.
Houston ISD director, Mirrored House II, said Thursday that school boards would consider Maskman Date next week, which requires all students and staff to wear face shields in facilities and buses.
A possible ratification of the mandate comes next week, when such measures are officially banned in Texas by executive order. Governor Greg Abbott banned them earlier this year and issued a second uniform order last week banning cities and other state agencies from imposing mask and vaccination requirements.
“As you know, the safety of HISD staff and students is my top priority,” House said in a video statement on Thursday. “As a result, I made progress on today’s agenda review to announce that I would propose a Maskman date. This Maskman Date is for students, staff, and visitors to all of our schools, buses, and facilities. The board of directors is to be voted on next Thursday. “
Harris County, which includes Houston and the surrounding area, is the largest and most populous county in Texas and is reported to have the highest number of COVID-19 cases. According to the state, 430,218 viruses have emerged in Harris County since the pandemic began in early 2020.
“Mask mandates will go into effect at the board meeting next Thursday with the approval of the board,” House continued. “With the announcement that Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner are raising the threat level from COVID to red, additional security measures are needed to protect students, employees and families. is.”
“This mask requirement applies to everyone, vaccinated or not,” said House.
So far there has been no response from Governor Abbott.
