Breaking news: ahead of today’s Detroit Tigers v Houston Astros game, the Astros placed five players on the COVID-19 IL.
For the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak last season, the Detroit Tigers experienced the tremendous impact of the virus firsthand when Houston put the following players on the IL:
- DH Jordan Alvarez
- 2B Jose Altuve
- 3B Alex Brgeman
- IF Robel Garcia
- C Martin Maldonado
Infielder Taylor Jones, catcher Garrett Stubbs and infielder Abraham Toro have been recalled, and infielder Alex De Goti and outfielder Ronnie Dawson have been added to the roster, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
With the loss of Alvarez, Altuve, Alvarez and Maldonado, the Astros lose four regular starters as they lost two in a row to the Tigers. After their streak, they have a day off before heading to Seattle for a three-game series starting Friday, then a day off on Monday before a two-game series in Colorado that begins Tuesday.
Last season, the Chicago Cubs were the only baseball team not affected by the COVID-19 virus, but on Tuesday the Cubs put Jason Adam, Dan Winkler, Matt Duffy and Brandon Workman on the COVID-19 injured list. On the same day, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Teoscar Hernandez tested positive for the virus. Then the twins put shortstop Andrelaton Simmons on the COVID-19 injured list today.
For the Detroit Tigers, Spencer Turnbull, who was put on the COVID-19 log as a precaution, will return next week. He is due to face the Cinnicinni Reds’ alternate squad in Toledo tomorrow night in Toledo and, as Evan Woodbery reports, is expected to complete 4 to 5 innings.
The Houston Tigers head to Oakland for a four-game series starting tomorrow, before taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 20.
