Houston roars again and wins a 3-2 win over Lipscomb

NORMAN, Oklahoma. – Junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson scored 19 kills while second setter Annie Cooke added 50 assists to lead the University of Houston volleyball program to an exciting 3-2 win (23-25, 22-25, 25- 22, 25-23, 15-5) via Lipscomb at McCasland Field House on Friday afternoon during the first day of the Oklahoma Invitational.

Jackson, a unanimous winner of the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference, led the Cougars with 23 points while hitting .471 (19 K-3 E-34 TA). The senior outside hitter Kortlyn Henderson finished with 10 kills and teamed up with junior middle blocker Rachel Tullos for team high honors with three block solos. The sophomore year Kate Georgiades led all players to victory with 15 digs.

The Cougars jumped 20-12 early in the first set and held a 22-17 lead late. However, the Lions won eight of the last nine points, securing the first set of the season.

In Set 2, the two teams battled to an 11-11 tie before Lipscomb scored six of the next seven points for a 17-12 lead. Houston reduced the gap to two points three times, but couldn’t get any closer with 0-2.

Tied 9-9 in Set 3, Houston used a 6-1 run to build a 15-10 lead and never fell behind the rest of the way to get 2-1 in the game.

The Lions were within 20-19 towards the end of the set, but the kill of junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson and the subsequent ace, plus a lipscomb offense and a serve error gave the Cougars a comfortable lead.

In Set 4, Houston grabbed a 13-12 lead and moved up to 17-13 thanks to four Jackson kills, including three straights. The Lions closed on 23-22 but a lipscomb mistake and another Jackson kill secured the set, forcing set 5 to be decisive.

In the final set, the Cougars took control early and scored five of the first six points thanks to two more kills from Jackson. After a pair of kills moved Lipscomb within 7-4, Houston took advantage of two more Lipscomb mistakes and kills from senior outside hitters Kennedy Warren and Henderson for an 11-3 lead.

The Cougars then finished the game with the last four points for the season opener win.

Kamryn Bacus led Lipscomb with 21 kills, Delaney Dilfer scored 53 assists and Ashleigh Albert posted 10 points in loss.


The Cougars continue to compete in the Oklahoma Invitational with two games on Saturday. Houston will face Oregon State at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday before the tournament ends on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against hosts Oklahoma.

After the Oklahoma Invitational, the Cougars will return home and open their home plan if they host the Flo Hyman Invitational at the Fertitta Center.

The Cougars will face Mississippi State on Friday, September 3 at 6:30 p.m., before heading to McNeese (11 a.m.) and ULM (6:30 p.m.) on Saturday, September 4.
