Houston Rolls in Saturday’s 3-Zero win over UTSA

UNIVERSITY STATION, Texas – Abbie Jackson, Senior Outside Hitter at the University of Houston, led all players with 16 kills when the Cougars took a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-21, 25-17 ) against UTSA won the arena on Saturday morning.

The Cougars bounced back from their first loss of the season on Friday and improved to 7-1 with the win. The Cougars will end the tournament when they face Albany at the Reed Arena on Saturday at 5 p.m. UTSA fell to 3-5.

The Cougars set the tone early in the game, taking the lead 6-1 in the first set and never looking back. The Roadrunners were within 13-11, but Houston scored six of the next eight points to take control of the first frame.

In the second set, the two teams paced back and forth before UTSA used an 8-3 run to knot the game at 19-19 after Alison Jennings’ kill. Fortunately, the Cougars accumulated six of the last eight points in the set for a 2-0 lead.
In the final frame, the Cougars built a 14-8 lead and held a late UTSA rally before scoring the final four points of the set.

Sophomore Annie Cooke led the Cougars with 27 assists while sophomore Libero added 19 hits to Kate Georgiades. Senior outside hitter Kennedy Warren and senior defensive specialist Torie Frederick each added 11 throws to the win.

Jennings and Hannah Lopez led UTSA with seven kills each, while Mekaila Aupiu scored a total of 16 assists. Mia Ybarra led the roadrunners with 16 excavations.

After the Texas A&M Invitational, the Cougars will continue their road swing as they play at the Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Ala, September 17-18.

Houston opens the tournament at 10am on September 17 as it faces Western Carolina before facing host Crimson Tide at 6pm later that evening. The Cougars will complete the tournament and their non-conference schedule when they meet Tennessee Tech on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

From there, the Cougars will open the American Athletic Conference game at the Fertitta Center. Houston will face Tulsa on September 24th before taking on Wichita State on September 26th.
