LIST: College provides distribution factors within the Houston space

The new school year is just around the corner and local leaders want the students to be ready.

The first day of school is just around the corner and this year it will be different. One thing is still pretty well known: the long lists and price tags for starting school.

However, school supplies are one of the many shortages that have arisen due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To prepare students for the new school year, local officials hold events where free school supplies are distributed.

Saturday 7th August

Aldine ISD will host its 6th annual Back to School Expo. It’s a free drive-through event for families in the district where free backpacks and supplies are collected. If you register in advance, you or your student can also receive a COVID-19 or other vaccination. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Location: MO Campbell Education Center, 1865 Aldine Bender Road, Houston, TX 77032

To get a backpack and / or vaccines, go through the entrance on Aldine Meadows Road (behind Thorne Stadium).

The Houston Police Department will distribute over 1,500 backpacks of supplies. It’s a drive-thru distribution, first come, first served, and parenting got to Bring your children to get the backpacks. As you drive through the parking lot, see the Houston Astros Shooting Stars, HPD Patrol horses, an HPD display helicopter, and more. The competition starts at 9 a.m.

The Alliance and PlazAmericas are jointly organizing a Back to School Drive on Saturday. Your event starts at 9:30 a.m. and will continue while supplies last. Last year they distributed free basic food and vaccinations for children to more than 3,000 students.

Stafford MSD invites the community to its “We Are One” party in the plaza. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the school district celebrates the return to face-to-face teaching. In addition to food, games and prizes, the event also offers school supplies, backpacks, COVID vaccinations and flu vaccinations. Activities with school supplies are only for enrolled students. The event is free, but you can register in advance.

Sunday 8th August

GMADE Clothing is holding a Back to School Bash in southwest Houston. In addition to school supplies and a rucksack giveaway, there is food, drinks, games and bouncy castles. The event takes place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Monday 9th August

The Community Back 2 School Giveaway is jointly hosted by Harris County Public Health and several black business owners. From 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., owners are offering free accessories and haircuts in a raffle for a Chromebook. The HCPH outreach team will provide care kits and give children and parents the opportunity to receive a vaccination with the Pfizer COVID vaccine.

Tuesday, August 10

Rapper Slim Thug and the BossLife Foundation partner with Checker’s to provide free school supplies. There are also rucksacks, discounted meals and gifts. Participants can also meet Slim Thug in person. The event takes place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursday, August 12th

Congressman Al Green is co-organizing a Green Light to Healthy Living Drive-Thru Back-to-School Kickoff. He works with Westbury High School and Community Health Choice. The first 500 students receive a backpack with free school supplies. Anyone who shows up has the option to receive prizes, a COVID vaccine and / or test, and free coupons for vaccinations and eye exams. The event lasts from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday August 14th

Mayor Sylvester Turner partners with Shell Oil Company and the Houston Food Bank for Mayor’s 11th annual Back to School Fest. This year’s event will be a drive-through distribution due to the pandemic. Volunteers will distribute 25,000 backpacks with school supplies and face masks. These materials are for students in fifth grade or lower. Distribution also includes boxes of groceries available for all families no matter what class your student is in. The passage begins at 8:00 a.m. and continues while stocks last. It is recommended that you register your student (s) in advance.

BakerRipley is working with other Houston organizations to distribute school supplies during its Back to School Health Fair. They will also offer health screenings, informational events and COVID vaccines for children and adults. The fair runs from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Foundation 45 Mitsubishi will host a drive-thru for back to school backpacks and school supplies. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., local sponsors will provide backpacks with supplies. Carter’s Community Youth Foundation and Youth Impact with Tyler & Taylor are giving away a Back to School Giveaway. This is the Foundation’s 3rd annual distribution. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the car ride offers free backpacks, free supplies, food and drinks for children. Adults have to buy their food.

Houston City Councilor Carolyn Evans-Shabazz holds her annual school supplies distribution from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. District D has enough supplies for more than 500 students this school year. The raffle is a drive-through event and students must be present to receive their materials.

Constable Silvia Trevino’s office (Harris County Precinct 6) is hosting a Drive-Thru Back 2 School Cool Down event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. You’ll have backpacks, school supplies, and more while supplies last. Students must be present.

Walmart’s back-to-school rallies

Families are invited to Walmart’s Here We Go back-to-school rallies. Selected stores provide bags with free school samples. Students can also practice their “First Day of School” photos on their photo wall. Each of the following events will take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
