Houston, February 7th, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – The DLR Group | Westlake Reed Leskosky announced today that it has been selected by the Ismaili Council for the USA to work with the London-based design architect Farshid Moussavi to design the Ismaili Center in Houston head and landscape architect Nelson Byrd Woltz. The DLR Group | WRL, recently named No. 1 among the cultural design bureaus by BD World Architecture, was named Executive Architect and Architect of Record in an international design competition. After the design of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland, this is the second collaboration between the DLR Group | WRL and Farshid Moussavi Architecture.
The new Ismaili Center will be located at the intersection of Allen Parkway and Montrose Boulevard west of downtown Houston. It is the seventh in a series of iconic cultural buildings that His Highness the Aga Khan has commissioned over the past four decades in Great Britain, Canada, Portugal, the United Arab Emirates and Tajikistan. When completed, the center will serve as a national center for the social, cultural and intellectual activities of the Ismaili Muslim community.
“We are very honored to be working with the Ismaili community to bring this historic building to life,” said Paul Westlake, FAIA, FACHA, Senior Principal of the DLR Group | WRL, who heads the company’s Cultural + Performing Arts Studio. “Houston is home to one of the largest Ismaili Muslim populations in North America, and the new center will serve as a place for parishioners to learn, pray, and engage in community. Our team is privileged to have been selected for a project that will have such a lasting impact on the local community and beyond. ”
The Ismaili Center in Houston will serve the city’s approximately 40,000 Ismaili Muslims and will include a jamatkhana or prayer hall, education rooms, a social hall, and several multi-purpose meeting and conference rooms. Planning for this important project has already started.
Barkat Fazal, President of the Ismaili Council for the United States, said, “We are delighted to be working with world-class and experienced architects to design this unique project. It will embody both the pluralistic vision of Houston and the Ismaili community. ”
